Authorities order temporary shut down of Vale’s Guaíba Island Terminal

Brazilian miner Vale has received a notice from the Mangaratiba city government in Rio de Janeiro, ordering the temporary suspension of port activities at the company’s Guaíba Island Terminal (TIG).

This is the second suspension order TIG received in the past two months. In late January, the government temporarily suspended operations at the terminal due to Vale’s alleged non-submission of the terminal’s environmental licences. The order was cancelled later after the company presented all the licences required.

Vale claims that it has all the required licences for the regular operation of the terminal, issued by the competent authorities and, accordingly, it will take all appropriate measures to ensure the reestablishment of its activities at TIG.

Vale’s terminal operations have suffered several setbacks in the past month. In February, Vale’s terminal at the Tubarão complex in Vitoria was closed by authorities due to pollution issues and the company also temporarily closed its Malaysia distribution centre after a major fire at the facility.

Earlier this month, the CEO of Vale, Fábio Schvartsman, and three other executives temporarily resigned from the company as investigations over the tragic dam collapse at one of its iron mines in January get underway.
