Discovery TV show investigates shipping disasters

A new TV series, Disasters At Sea, starts tomorrow on Discovery Canada. The series will focus on one accident per show, starting with the sinking of the Derbyshire, an ore-bulk-oil combination carrier, which went down in a typhoon in 1980 off Japan with the loss of 44 lives. The series will also be available in the US via the Smithsonian Channel.

Each episode tells the unimaginable true story of a maritime disaster, combining harrowing re-enactments with expert analysis from marine investigators. Whether it’s survivor testimony about a sudden sound, GPS data about the ship’s speed, or the scatter pattern of wreckage at the bottom of the ocean, each piece of evidence helps investigators build a picture of the deadly chain of events

Other ship disasters the Discovery series will look at include the Rocknes and MSC Napoli.
