New Zealand looks at shifting Ports of Auckland
The New Zealand government is looking at shifting the country’s largest container port away from its prime real estate position in the country’s largest city.
An initial report commissioned by the government backs up Auckland Council’s idea to shift Ports of Auckland, which the council owns, to a different location, likely the Port of Tauranga to the north, or Northport near Whangārei to the south. The report suggests significant investment in new rail capacity will be needed if Auckland’s port is to move elsewhere. Further studies are to be commissioned.
As well as being the largest boxport, Auckland is also New Zealand’s largest car import terminal.
Tauranga is to the east of Auckland, whilst Northport is at Marsden Point, which lies to the north of Auckland.
