Pipelayer explosion injures 14

A massive explosion and ensuing fire on the 29-year-old pipelayer Israfil Huseynov yesterday evening saw 14 seafarers suffer burn injuries, three critically. The accident happened in the Caspian Sea.

The fire on the ship, owned by Azerbaijan’s Caspian Shipping Company, and operated by Saipem, was put out after five hours with the injured crew taken to a nearby hospital.

Investigations into the accident are expected to get underway today.
