On the back of China’s Ministry of Transport raising security fears over Chinese vessels transiting the Straits of Malacca, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has issued a release claiming it has not received any information on immediate threaten the area.
“The Port of Singapore will maintain the current security level 1 as per the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code and Singapore’s security agencies will continue to be vigilant,” the MPA stated, while China has raised its security level to the highest possible earlier this week.
A source in a Chinese state-run shipping company told Splash yesterday that the alert was issued as the ministry believes an illegal Indonesian armed group is planning attacks on Chinese ships.
“We do not currently believe this is a necessary requirement for other vessels and do not have any evidence of a specified threat to Chinese vessels,” maritime security risk management specialist Dryad Global said in an update.
