Mexico City: Two workers died and 10 were injured in an accident on a Pemex oil rig offshore Mexico on Tuesday.
There were 101 men aboard the Troll Solution platform when one of the supports collapsed and the rig partially sank, forcing all personnel to be evacuated.
It happened in the Caan field in the southern Bay of Campeche. A spokesman for Pemex, Mexico’s state oil company, said there was no spill but the platform was continuing to lean into the sea on Tuesday afternoon.
The Troll Solution was positioning itself to carry out maintenance on wells linked to the Caan Alf platform when the incident happened.
Tuesday’s accident came just over a month since another incident on a Pemex platform in the Bay of Campeche led to multiple fatalities. That was on April 1 when the Abkatun Permanente exploded and caught fire, killing four workers and leaving three missing.
Pemex assured industry watchers that output would not be affected on Tuesday, tweeting: “The accident on the Troll Solution platform does not affect production because it is a mobile platform dedicated to well maintenance.”
