Copenhagen: Maersk Line has come in for a series of 20,000 teu ships to be built in Korea worth more than $1bn.
Broking sources told Splash that the new order is for seven firm 20,000 teu vessels with options for a further four ships. Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) beat out Hyundai Heavy Industries and Samsung Heavy Industries for the contract. DSME is where Maersk opted for in 2011, to build its series of 18,000 teu vessels.
A spokesperson for Maersk declined to confirm the deal, merely telling Splash: “What I can say is what we have said earlier this year, that we will order ships.”
The ships, which will deliver in 2017 and 2018, are priced at $155m each.
