Crew lose battle to right stricken vessel off Mumbai

Mumbai: India’s Navy and 20 crew members on board the Jindal Kamakshi (9,107 dwt, built 2009) are battling to save the general cargo vessel after it listed heavily around 40 nm from Mumbai last night, while on its way to Mundra Port (pictured).

The navy sent a rescue craft and helicopter to the scene after it received a distress call from the stricken ship around midnight last night.

All 20 crew members are still onboard attempting to right the ship, and are in constant contact with the Indian Navy, who will evacuate the vessel should the situation worsen.

What caused the vessel to list is as yet unknown, but there are some reports in the local media that there is a hull breach and the vessel could sink at any time.

UPDATE: The Ministry of Defence has now confirmed that all 20 crew members have been evacuated. Below is a video of their rescue.
