Navigator Gas LPG tanker and containership collide near Surabaya

Singapore: An LPG tanker owned by Navigator Gas, Navigator Aries (23,333 dwt, built 2008), and containership Leo Perdana (33,423 dwt, built 2007) collided yesterday in waters off Gresik, nearby the Port of Tunjung Perak in Surabaya, Indonesia.

Navigator Aries had left Tanjung Perak, carrying cargo for Pertamina to Kalbut, when the accident occurred just before 1am Monday morning.

The tanker collided with containership Leo Perdana, which was inbound to Surabaya, shortly after departure with reports of bad weather leading to the accident. The collision left a large breach in the port side of the tanker, which caught fire and had to be extinguished by local port authority tugs sent to the scene.

Leo Perdana continued onto Surabaya under its own power and is currently undergoing inspection, while the Navigator Aries remains anchored around 10nm off Gresik.

There were no injuries reported in the accident.
