Matson slapped with $15m fine for giant molasses spill
Matson Navigation has agreed to fork out $15m to pay for a 2013 molasses spill in Honolulu. The fine is one of the largest environmental penalties in Hawaii’s history.
The settlement includes a combination of cash, restoration efforts and funding for environmental programs, he said.
Matson also agreed to cease its molasses operation in Hawaii and pay for removal of its molasses tanks and any remaining molasses.
The 1,400 tons of molasses that spilled into the harbour in 2013 killed more than 26,000 fish and other marine life. Much of the harbour was closed for nearly a fortnight as a result.
