Seven people were injured this morning when a serious fire broke out at a drydock in South Korea. A pair of VLGCs were in Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering’s eighth drydock when the fire started at around 0900 local time.
Initial speculation suggests the fire was caused by a welder working on the inside of one of the VLGCs. The fire spread rapidly sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky. The local fire department spent most of the day tackling the blaze.
It remains unclear the extent of the damage to the pair of ships, and the drydock.
For DSME, which is in financial trouble and facing restructuring, the timing of this accident could not be worse.
