Alpha Bulkers capesize fixed on timecharter at decent rate

Today saw a rare capesize period fixture on a day in which the Baltic Dry Index advance by 13 points to 609, having languished below the 600-mark for the past week.

Alpha Bulkers’ cape Alpha Hope (181,400 dwt, built 2011) was reported fixed to Cargill for seven to nine months at a daily rate of $10,000. The ship will deliver promptly at Cape Passero, according to Baltic Exchange data.

The rate is the highest reported capesize period rate seen since around November last year, and is a small advance on the last reported fixture.

On Thursday, Hong Xiang Shipping’s super-cape Wish Star (205,797 dwt, built 2015) achieved just $9,400 daily when it was reported fixed to Oldendorff for six to nine months. The vessel will deliver in China between June 28 and July 8.

London-based shipbroker and period market specialist Alibra Shipping today estimates six-month period rates of $8,400 per day for capesizes in both the Atlantic and Pacific basins.
