Anadarko Petroleum has discovered hydrocarbons at one of its wells in the US Gulf of Mexico.
The Warrior-2 well is in the Green Canyon area about 190km from the coast and was drilled to a depth of 31,646 feet with a water layer of 4,122 feet.
Woodlands, Texas-based Anadarko, which on Monday announced it was cutting its 2017 capex by $300m, is the operator of the well.
It is partnered in the project by Colombia’s state-owned oil firm Ecopetrol, which has a 30% stake.
This find is described as light crude and analysis is being done to evaluate the volume it contains.
Warrior-2 is just 7 miles away from the K2 production field that is operated by Anadarko. K2 ties back to the Marco Polo field and Warrior-2’s closeness to it offers Anadarko a head start in the production process.
