Ashdod port workers strike

Cairo: Chaos reigns at Asdod Port where an impasse between workers and the state has forced the port to shut down most operations.

Transport Minister, Yisrael Katz, instructed the acting ceo of the Ashdod Port, Yitzhak Blumenthal, to suspend the chairman of the port’s workers union, Avinoam Shushan, which drew the ire of workers. Shushan had been calling for a strike; his departure precipitated one.

Workers at the port say they will not return to work unless Shushan is reinstated.

Ashdod port workers are unhappy at Tel Aviv’s plans to introduce privately run ports into Israel to generate greater competition.

The port came under fire from Hamas rockets earlier this week.  [09/08/14]
