Atlantica snaps up supramax

Sources tell Splash that Norwegian asset player Atlantica Shipping, led by Johan Werner, has sealed its first bulker purchase this year, tabling just under $16m for 14-year-old, Mitsui Tamano-built supramax Kitakami, a ship which was listed owned by Bancorp in the US according to MarineTraffic. The new addition brings Atlantica Shipping’s supramax arm up to three same-aged ships.

The deal follows in the footsteps of four highly profitable tanker sales. Two deals were sealed this year. It has recently sold two 2007-built tankers, the 46,000 dwt Atlantica Breeze and Atlantica Bay. The Atlantica Breeze is now renamed and delivered to a Chinese account that has renamed the ship Rui Fu Sheng, earning the active owner some $5m on the ship after toying with it since 2019 while also earning a similar amount on the sister ship.

At the end of 2022, it sealed two other also tanker deals, selling two MR tankers – Atlantica Bell (2006) and the Atlantica Bridge (2005) – to Gatik Ship Management. Oslo-based Atlantica Shipping made fortunes on these two tankers as well. The Atlantica Bridge was purchased for some $12m, while it sold for just under $20m, earnings on selling the sister ship were roughly the same.

Now the Norwegian financial player’s current fleet counts one container vessel two tankers, two supramax dry bulk vessels, two MPP vessels and four PSVs.
