Authorities look to ban trucks on key Manila throughfare

Manila: One of the main throughfares in the heart of Manila may well be put off limits to truck drivers in the latest development in the capital’s port congestion saga.

With a string of important events set to be held in the capital in the coming months, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has recommended that cargo trucks and other heavy vehicles with a gross weight of 4,500 kg be banned from using Roxas Boulevard for six months starting tomorrow, despite the fact Roxas is one of few roads in the capital to have a dedicated lane for trucks.

Truckers have already been hit for most of this year with a ban across many key roads from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. daily except on Sundays and holidays. This ban has led to severe congestion at Manila’s ports.  [02/11/14]
