Bahrain cruise figures pick up

Dubai: Bahrain is seeing a notable windfall from more and more cruiseship calls. Around $11m has entered the country’s coffers from cruise visits in the past year, according to Gulf Daily News.

The season, which is now coming to a close, saw a total of around 50,000 cruise tourists land in Bahrain on board 37 ships.

"This has been a very fruitful season," said Culture Ministry head of tourism marketing Isa Hassani. "The tourists have gone away extremely happy and many have promised to return later."

Each vessel that berths in Bahrain is estimated to be worth around $300,000 to the economy.

The number of calls had nosedived in the wake of the Arab Spring two years ago, but is now picking up again.

The cruise season reopens in the region in November.  [22/03/13]
