Bangladesh recycling upgrade

Bangladesh is pushing ahead with a BTK120m ($1.5m) upgrade for all its shipbreaking yards at Sitakunda.

The Norwegian Agency for Development Corporation (NORAD) and International Maritime Organization (IMO) have extended financial and technical support so that the yards will have treatment storage disposal facilities. Vessels to clean up the surrounding sea as well as a new hospital are also planned.

Bangladesh has had to act fast as a number of shipowners, even whole national shipowner associations, have said they will boycott the nation’s yards until they improve their working practices.
