BHP Billiton celebrates billionth tonne of iron ore sent to China

Shanghai: BHP Billiton held a celebration in Shanghai this week to celebrate the shipment of its one billionth tonne of iron ore to China.

BHP's first shipment of the steelmaking raw material left Port Hedland in West Australia 1973.

The Melbourne-based company said it will grow capacity further to reach 290 million tonnes per year by mid-2017.

CEO Andrew Mackenzie noted: "It took nearly 30 years for BHP Billiton to ship 100m tonnes of iron ore to China and then only 12 more years to reach the 1bn tonne milestone.”  [12/12/14]
