Bob Burke warns on risks of investors piling into shipping

Delegates attending last week’s by invitation only Maritime CEO Forum were warned by one of the world’s most famous names in tankers to be aware of the risks coming from investors from outside the industry.

Speaking as part of a high calibre tanker panel, Bob Burke, head of Ridgebury Tankers, said: “The world is awash with capital”. He went on to explain how investors view shipping as an easy sector into which to invest huge sums overnight to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars, whereas it would take them months to invest similar numbers in other industries.

The Maritime CEO Forum in Hong Kong was sponsored by Anglo-Eastern, Cobham, Compas, Dualog, DVB, Liberian Registry, Marlink and Transas. The next edition of the forum will be in Singapore in April 2019.
