Hong Kong: Severe winds were cited this afternoon as the likely cause for the grounding of the 2,810 teu containership Hansa Constitution which rammed into the shore off Pok Fu Lam, in an incident videoed by many locals and since posted online. No casualties were reported and there was no risk of the ship sinking, local authorities said.
As well as strong monsoon winds, visibility in the Special Administrative Region had dropped to less than two nautical miles at the time of the accident.
The 35,000 dwt ship, which belongs to Germany’s Hansa Treuhand, was en route to Chiwan in western Shenzhen when it ran aground. [06/04/14]
