Canadian authorities struggle to shift grounded Algoma Spirit

San Francisco: Authorities in Canada are struggling to move a grounded bulker that has caused mayhem on the St Lawrence Seaway. The Algoma Spirit (1986 built; 34,685 dwt) bulker lost power and ran aground on Saturday afternoon near Cornwall Island. Two tugs were dispatched to help shift it, but as of the early hours of Monday morning the vessel still had not moved. Commercial navigation was suspended on the waterway.

The Algoma Spirit is the third ship in the past six weeks to run aground on the waterway.
