Captain and officer held after bulker crew death

Athens: The captain and co-captain of the bulker Kosmas V (57,300 dwt, built 2011) have been arrested in Greece after the death of a crew member.

Four members of the crew fainted while the vessel, operated by Greece’s Edem Maritime, was unloading coal at the port of Drepanon, western Greece.

One was later found dead; two others are in hospital and the fourth is in a special unit for chest conditions, the Hellenic Coast Guard said in a statement.

A post-mortem will be conducted on the body. The public prosecutor has appointed experts to investigate the circumstances of the death “and take necessary safety measures on board”, the Coast Guard said.
