China coal imports may drop further

Beijing: Coal imports to China dropped 3.9% in May with less demand due to the government policy to ban low-quality coal imports, and are expected to decline further according the National Energy Administration.

The month-on-month fall in coal imports was also attributed to slow power consumption growth and a steady decline in domestic coal prices, making the import situation even worse.

"As the price gap between domestic and imported coal is narrowing, and coal inventories at most ports are near full, coal imports may fall again," the China Coal Transport and Distribution Association said yesterday. [20/06/13]
