China’s first hydrogen fuel cell-powered ship starts operations

China’s first ship powered by a 500 KW hydrogen fuel cell has been put into operation by China Three Gorges Corporation.

The service ship, Three Gorges hydrogen ship No.1, uses homegrown hydrogen fuel cells and a lithium battery system and will be used for transportation, patrol and emergency services in the Three Gorges reservoir area.

Many other countries are experimenting with hydrogen fuel cell technology. Earlier this week European containerline Samskip contracted India’s Cochin Shipyard to build a pair of hydrogen fuel cell-propelled boxships.

Comments

  1. The introduction of hydrogen-powered ships like Three Gorges hydrogen ship No.1 is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the shipping industry, which is responsible for a significant portion of global carbon emissions. It is also expected to enhance energy security and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.

It is encouraging to see China, taking significant steps towards sustainable shipping. This development underscores the urgent need for the shipping industry to adopt green technologies and reduce its environmental footprint. It is hoped that other nations will follow suit and invest in clean energy solutions for the shipping industry.
