Chinese yards pursue process improvement

Singapore: Chinese shipyards have a “big opportunity” for process improvement, a leading European software executive has told SinoShip News.

Bert Geisler, director of marine solutions at Siemens PLM Software, said, “Yards who are able to change products will survive.” He noted that Chinese shipbuilders are still in transition. “They are no longer the low cost centre. They are evolving into high tech companies,” he insisted, noting how the transition was very much in step with Beijing’s efforts to get the economy to adopt best practices.

Siemens is marketing its recently launched Shipbuilding Catalyst at the moment. The product is aimed at helping accelerate the deployment of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and further enhancing PLM value. Using a pre-packaged combination of industry-specific best practice guides, templates and tailored software, the Shipbuilding Catalyst integrates and synchronizes shipbuilding operations, including crucial members of the supplier network and third-party service providers.
