CIMC becomes shipowner

Dalian: In a further diversification of business the world’s largest container manufacturer has become a shipowner in a move to help ease the funding crunch facing one of the world’s top containerlines. STX Dalian Shipbuilding Complex, the subsidiary South Korea’s STX Offshore & Shipbuilding, has announced a $330m deal to build four 9,200 teu boxships to China International Marine Containers (CIMC), STX said in a statement on Sunday. The ships will be delivered to CIMC by 2014 and they will be chartered to France’s CMA CGM.

STX’s Dalian yard has taken $2.2bn of orders this year and stands on a healthy backlog of $4.4bn. This latest order is the largest sized containership that STX Dalian has undertaken to date.  [24/09/12]
