CKYHE Alliance cuts Asia-North Europe and Mediterranean services

The CKYHE Alliance, made up of major container lines COSCO, K Line, Yang Ming, Hanjin Shipping and Evergreen, is to cut sailings on its Asia-Europe and Asia-Mediterranean services.

The alliance said the cancellations were made “in order to cope with the seasonal market demand”. This gives something of a grim outlook, considering the Christmas season approaching, which usually provides a boost for container carriers.

Nine voyages will be cut on the current Asia-northern Europe/Mediterranean service loops in November and December this year (the specific loops are listed below).

Three sailings have been cut from the weekly NE7 service (port rotations listed below), on which eight boxships of between 13,000 to 14,000 teu are employed. In February, 10 vessels were working on the loop.

Two voyages have been lost from the NE8 loop to northern Europe, on which five ships of around 8,500 teu are working. Ten vessels were employed on the loop back in February.

Heading to the Mediterranean, three sailings will be lost from the MD2 loop and one from ADR. Earlier this year, ten 8,500-teu ships were employed on each of these routes, but this has been reduced to seven and nine vessels respectively.

“The CKYHE Alliance will continue providing excellent weekly services covering major ports connecting Asia and North Europe and Mediterranean regions,” a statement said.

Container lines have been rocked by vessel overcapacity, low demand and rock-bottom freight rates. This morning, Maersk Line announced massive spending cuts, at least 4,000 redundancies and reductions to its network capacity.
