Fleet management is a highly complex process, which is not only challenging employees of shipping companies, but also for corresponding software solutions. Missing transparency, time-consuming information procurement, inefficient communication and software updates per CD are just some of the reasons for high financial losses.
According to a 2014 survey carried by Haufe & Lexware, an insufficient knowledge base has dramatic consequences: 82% of those interviewed said that inadequate knowledge management leads to more work. 69% answered that tasks are not finished quite well. 66% agree that missing knowledge within a company leads to wrong decisions and 53% think that this is the reason for lacking motivation. In 2001, Susan Feldman and Chris Sherman made an analysis of a company and gave proof that employees spend 25% of their daily work time with data research. Assuming that a company has 100 employees, the company could save about EUR1.5m per year by providing better information.
What defines a strong solution for information management?
Both ashore and aboard there are diverse tasks that have to be done by several teams. Connecting these teams with each other and enabling real-time communication between them brings high chances of cost-saving opportunities for shipping companies. Cloud-based solutions lead the way to connect shipping company employees, external agencies, partners and crews on the sea. Another advantage is that cloud-based communication avoids silos of information in different departments.
Data is offered cross-departmental and processed collectively. Data exchange per email belongs to the past. Nowadays, provision of information takes place independently from where people are located or which kind of device they use for example a computer, tablet or smartphone.
