ConocoPhillips terminating jackup rig contract with Rowan

Houston-based multinational energy corporation ConocoPhillips is cutting short its contract with Rowan Companies for jackup rig Rowan Gorilla VI in waters offshore Norway.

The original contract, at a day rate of $362,000, was due to expire in March 2018.

Conoco is terminating the deal with Rowan – also a Houston-based firm – once the Gorilla VI completes plugging and abandonment operations at the Ekofisk field about 200 miles southwest of Stavanger.

It was unclear on Thursday how many jobs could be lost because of the termination.
