Shanghai: The construction of the long-planned Nicaragua Canal is expected to be started in December with the construction of a port on the country’s Pacific coast.
"The great canal is scheduled to get underway in December. Logically, the first thing will be its ports, which have been a need and aspiration of Nicaragua's," said Telemaco Talavera, an official from the state-run Grand Canal Commission.
According to Talavera, the port would be located at Britto, in the Rivas department on the Pacific coast.
The $40bn project aimed at linking the country's Pacific and Caribbean coasts via a waterway three times longer than the Panama Canal.
Chinese company HKND Group will undertake the whole development work of the canal. [10/09/14]
