Customs fry rice scam

Manila:  An illegal shipment of at least P1.2bn worth of rice from Vietnam was opened by the Bureau of Customs yesterday.

“This is the biggest smuggled rice hauled in the history of the Bureau… this is the mother of all smuggled rice. We’ve hit the mother load,” said BOC deputy commissioner for intelligence Danilo Lim.

The shipment, which came in more than 1,100 teu, arrived at the Cebu Port from March 22 to April 2 from Vietnam.

The shipment was misdeclared as ceiling insulation slabs, granite slabs, stone slabs and wall insulator slabs.  [26/04/13]
