Damen opens new shipyard in Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City: Damen has opened its new joint venture yard in Vietnam, Damen Song Cam, with Vietnam’s Minister of Transport cutting the ribbon on the new yard yesterday.

The yard is one of the largest in the Damen group and will produce around 40 ships annually, while meeting European health, safety and environmental standards. It is based on a 43-hectare site, of which 500m is directly alongside the River Cam.

Chris Groninger, managing director of Damen Song Cam comments: “Damen started building in Vietnam for the first time at Song Cam yard and this venture was such a successful cooperation for both Damen and Song Cam that we decided to bring this to the next level and that led to Damen Song Cam.”

Damen Song Cam will employ 300 people and when phase 2 is realised this will rise to 800 people with a planned building capacity of up to 80 vessels annually. [25/03/14]
