Damietta port workers demand action

Cairo: Members of the employees union in Damietta container company have threatened to sue the company for its failure to deliver on promises to dredge the berths at the port to keep up with the growth of megaships around the world. Damietta has seen container volumes slide as it has not been able to cater to larger ships. The union blasted the government too in Cairo for failing to ensure the port kept pace with international maritime developments. The union fears a large swather of workers will be made redundant if it continues to lose out in regional box trades.  [05/11/13]
