DP World London Gateway to build third berth

London: DP World’s London Gateway port is to build a third berth, which should be operational in the second half of 2016.

The construction will extend the existing quay by 400 metres, which will be dredged to a depth of 17 metres to allow the largest containerships afloat to berth.

Four new quay cranes have been ordered from ZPMC. Contractor Volker Fitzpatrick will undertake the civil and electrical works.

“The new third berth will create hundreds of jobs and is a signal that the UK maritime sector is continuing to grow. The maritime sector directly contributes £14bn to our economy every year and supports more than a million jobs,” said Patrick McLoughlin MP, secretary of state for transport.

London Gateway is also busy expanding its adjacent London Gateway Logistics Park, which provides distribution facilities for importers and exporters.

“On Friday, last week, we welcomed the global CEO for Prologis, Hamid R. Moghadam, and broke ground on our 316,000-square-foot joint-venture distribution centre, which will be ready for occupation later this year,” Simon Moore, CEO of DP World London Gateway, said.

“The DP World London Gateway Logistics Centre, our common user facility, is also on track to open in Q2 this year and we are in advanced negotiations with several more clients for the Park,” he continued.

The UK’s largest container haulage company, Maritime, is now establishing a base at DP World London Gateway. Container-related service company Pentalver is also constructing a new facility, which DP World says will open soon.
