Dubai: The APL Phoenix today became the first scheduled vessel to call at DP World’s new container terminal at Jebel Ali, Dubai.

DP World’s Chairman, His Excellency Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem; Vice-Chairman, HE Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah and Group CEO, Mohammed Sharaf visited the new Terminal 3 to welcome the vessel, along with other senior members of DP World and APL staff.

“We are proud to welcome the APL Phoenix to Terminal 3 as trial operations begin at our newest terminal,” HE Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman of DP World, said. “As the $850m Terminal 3 comes on line, it will support the growth of Dubai, the UAE and the wider region.”

Once fully operational next year, Terminal 3 will add a further 4m TEU capacity to the port, taking total handling capacity at Jebel Ali to 19m TEU.

The terminal has a draft of 18 metres, enabling it to handle up to 10 Ultra Large Container Ships (ULCS) at the same time. [22/10/14]
