Eight crew from German ship taken hostage off Cameroon

Pirates have kidnapped eight crew members of a German-owned ship in a raid on the vessel off the coast of Cameroon.

MC-Schiffahrt said in a statement on its website on Friday that it had assembled an emergency team and was cooperating with local authorities in the West African country to deal with the incident, which happened late on Wednesday.

It said the ship, the MarMalaita, had 12 crewmembers on board at the time of the abduction.

“It is with deep regret and great concern to inform that our vessel MarMalaita was attacked by pirates,” the statement read.

The anchorage where the general cargo vessel was attacked has been the scene of numerous other piracy incidents in recent months as West Africa has descended into the global hotspot for piracy.
