Eneti moves to up wind game with offshore driller Transocean

Emanuele Lauro-led offshore wind player Eneti and offshore drilling giant Transocean are looking to join forces in the rapidly growing offshore wind services sector.

The New York-listed duo has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the intention of setting up a joint venture company that will engage in offshore wind foundation installation activities.

The plan being discussed includes the conversion of at least two Transocean vessels into floating offshore wind foundation installation platforms capable of carrying and setting up six 3,500-ton, 12-m diameter monopile foundations.

The establishment and operation of the joint venture are subject to definitive agreements and would also comprise expertise and operational personnel to be provided by both companies, as well as the option for each of Transocean and Eneti to invest in the joint venture with additional partners.

“The joint venture would benefit from the best-in-class experience of both partners across their respective core businesses providing offshore services,” Eneti and Transocean said in a joint release.

The Swiss-based Transocean owns and operates a fleet of 37 rigs, comprised of drillships and semisubs, while the Monaco-based Eneti owns a fleet of five wind turbine installation vessels (WTIVs) and has a pair of NG16000X-class WTIVs booked for construction at DSME in South Korea.
