Dubai: Initial reports over the weekend that Somali pirates had made their first successful ship hijacking appear to have been incorrect. Reuters reports that Eritrean forces boarded a boxship that was in their territorial waters. Initially the crew of the container vessel, MV Marzooqah, reported the incident as a pirate attack, creating confusion.
"We assess this is an operation by the Eritrean forces, who went on board the vessel," Lieutenant Commander Jacqueline Sherriff, spokeswoman for the European Union Naval Force Somalia (EU NAVFOR), told Reuters. [20/01/14]
