Expansion at Westports will begin this month

Kuala Lumpur: Work on the expansion of Westport Malaysia’s Container Terminal 8 is expected to begin later this month at Port Klang, Malaysia.

Muhibbah Engineering (M) has been awarded a RM135m ($39.2m) contract for the construction of a 300-metre extension of the quay, plus access bridges and associated works, an exchange filing said today.

The contract is expected to be completed within a year and comprises the first of two stages of expansion at the terminal.

The Container Terminal 8 expansion plan aims to deal with rising container volumes and the terminal’s current high utilisation rate.

The second part of the expansion project, known as Part B, if awarded will be completed by the third quarter of 2016.

The project will increase the container handling capacity of Westports from the present 11m TEU to 13.8m TEU upon completion. [3/12/14]
