Fire engulfs general cargo ship in Istanbul

General cargo ship Mark caught fire off Istanbul in the Marmara Sea today forcing all crew to evacuate.

According to Turkish local reports, the fire broke out in the accommodation area of the ship when it was anchoring off Istanbul following a voyage from Beirut.

All 15 crew onboard the ship, including 10 Syrians, three Indians and two Egyptians, were evacuated safely from the vessel.

As of 6am local time, the firefighting operations were still ongoing.

The 1981-built vessel is owned by Liberian company Nord Marine.
