Jakarta: Three people have been injured in a fire onboard the MV Mentari Pratama (5,300 dwt, built 2005) while docked in a ship repair yard in Surabaya, Indonesia.
A gas cylinder is thought to have exploded during welding work, causing the fire onboard the Indonesia-flagged vessel (pictured) on January 24, according to local media reports.
The three men were burnt while trying to extinguish the fire, and were transferred to hospital in Tanjung Perak. Indonesian police are investigating the incident.
Four teams of firefighters were able to put out the blaze within an hour. The cargo of 28 containers was not affected, reports say.
The ship is operated by Surabaya-based Mentari Sejata Perkasa, which specialises mainly in container shipping and logistics in east Indonesia. The ship was transporting containers from Gorontalo Sulawesi. [26/01/15]
