First phase of Beirut Port container terminal expansion complete

Beirut: The opening of the first phase of Beirut Port's expansion project takes place today, launching the new project that expands the capacities of the Lebanese port, pushing it forward towards the ranks of international ports.

The head of the International Chamber of Navigation-Beirut, Elie Zakhour said the expansion: "opens the door to wider business callings, and brings an increase in the number of callers, and gives Beirut Port a leading role in the Mediterranean."

Upgrades include increasing the length from 600 meters to 1100 meters, increasing the depth of the basin from 15.5 meters to 16.5 meters which allows the largest containerships in the world to dock, and increasing the number of giant gantry cranes from six to twelve. [22/10/13]
