Fred Olsen Windcarrier wins vessel contract in Denmark

Norwegian offshore wind turbine installation company Fred Olsen Windcarrier (FOWIC) has landed a vessel contract with RWE for the installation of 72 offshore wind turbine generators at the 1 GW Thor offshore wind farm in the Danish North Sea.

The project will utilise one of the two FOWIC’s Tern class installation vessels, which by the time of the project execution, will feature a new and upgraded fully electric crane with a lifting capacity of 1,600 metric tons as well as other upgrades to the vessel including jacking system.

Thor will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. The wind farm will be built off the Danish west coast and is scheduled to reach full operation in 2027.

Installation of the turbines at sea is expected to begin in 2026, and are planned to be carried out from the Port of Esbjerg, Denmark. Belgian marine contractor Jan De Nul and Greece’s Hellenic Cables have been selected to deliver export cable as well as inter-array cable systems for the project.
