Germany launches 7 GW offshore wind auction

Germany’s Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has launched an auction for four new offshore wind sites in the North Sea and the Baltic with a combined capacity of 7 GW.

As a step towards Germany achieving its offshore expansion goal of 30 GW by 2030, three North Sea areas, each with an output of 2 GW, are being offered, and one area with a capacity of 1 GW is up for tender in the Baltic Sea.

Bids need to be submitted by June 1, 2023, and those awarded the contract will be required to carry out preliminary investigations before the construction of a wind farm.

The auction will be held using the widely criticised dynamic bidding process, where bids as low as zero cents per kWh will be considered. If multiple bids are tied for the lowest value, the bidder with the greatest willingness to pay will secure the area.

Further tenders for 1.8 GW of offshore wind energy are expected by March 1, 2023.
