Grimaldi car carrier Grande Europa catches fire in the Mediterranean
A few weeks after the sinking of con-ro Grande America off the French coast due to a fire, another vessel in the fleet of Naples-based Grimaldi Group caught fire early this morning in the Mediterranean.
The car carrier Grande Europa, while en route from Salerno to Valencia, was hit by a fire onboard when transiting off the island of Mallorca.
Several SAR and firefighting ships were deployed to fight the fire while 14 of the 25 crew on board were evacuated by helicopter, while the others remained on board to help combat the fire.
Spanish emergency services have now got the fire under control.
Based on videos of fire fighting efforts, the fire appears to have been located in a small section of the covered upper decks of the vessel.
It was not yet clear what had caused the fire.
