Guangzhou Dredging Company orders giant dredger

Shanghai: Dutch shipbuilder IHC Merwede will soon start constructing the largest trailing suction hopper dredger it has ever produced for a Chinese customer, CCCC Guangzhou Dredging Company (GDC).

“This latest addition to GDC's dredging fleet will be built at a Dutch shipyard, despite the fact that it is based in a country with an in-depth knowledge of the field of shipbuilding,” IHC Merwede noted in a release.

Guangzhou needs to regularly dredge the Pearl river around its premier container port, Nansha, to ensure large ships can call there.

The dredger was part of a raft of orders just announced by the European firm worth a combined EUR350m.  [06/02/14]
