Guangzhou to set up local shipping line

Guangzhou: Guangzhou is planning to set up its own ocean-going fleet, with Guangzhou Port Group, Guangdong Province Navigation Group and Guangzhou Development Shipping funding the set up of Guangzhou Ocean Container Shipping Company.

The Guangzhou government is keen to develop the local container transport business, and will encourage the leading state-owned shipping companies, including China Shipping and Cosco to expand business in Guangzhou.

Guangzhou expects to greatly reduce shipping costs through the establishment of the local fleet, and will explore new international routes from the port, as well as providing freight rate subsidies to local shippers.

Guangzhou aims to achieve 550m tons cargo throughput and 20m teu container throughput by 2017, and plans to launch 20 new international shipping routes.
