Haifa port works go on strike

Cairo: As predicted by GulfShip News yesterday, workers at Israel's state-owned Haifa Port went on strike yesterday, protesting Tel Aviv’s privatisation plans.

Tel Aviv is pushing ahead with two new private ports to bring competition to the nation’s state-run terminals. Moreover, on Sunday the government said it would look to sell up to 49% stakes in both Haifa and the country’s other main port, Ashdod.

It remains unclear how long this latest strike will last. [07/10/14]
