Hanoi urges ports to up fees

Hanoi: The government has stressed to local ports that fees are already too low and the ports should not feel pressurised by shipping lines to lower their charges further.

Vietnam’s ports are already suffering, most posting losses, a result of the fact there are too many ports built in recent years.

Deputy minister of transport Nguyen Van Cong said yesterday that the Vietnam Maritime Administration (Vinamarine) should ask the Vietnam Seaports Association (VPA) and owners of local ports to turn down requests by foreign shipping lines for lower port service fees.

Moreover, the ministry has told Vinamarine to try and raise port fees at the Cai Mep-Thi Vai port complex in the south of the country, the area with the densest amount of terminals.  [31/10/14]
